The camera is only as fast as the card it writes to. A slow card throttles the burst buffer — the camera fills its internal RAM, then slows to the card's write speed, and you start losing frames. In video, a card that can't sustain the required write speed causes dropped frames or forces the camera to stop recording entirely.
Angelbird makes cards specifically tested for professional video and photography workflows. Their AV PRO line is optimised for sustained write speeds — the metric that matters for burst shooting and video — not just peak speeds, which is what cheaper cards advertise.
| Canon body | Card slot 1 | Card slot 2 | Minimum for burst / video |

Angelbird CFexpress Type B — for R1, R5 II, R6 III, R6V
CFexpress Type B is Canon's top-speed card format, used in the dual-slot bodies. The Angelbird AV PRO CFe Type B is built around sustained write performance — it doesn't throttle after the first few seconds of recording the way budget cards do.
| Model | Capacity | Read | Write (sustained) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AV PRO CFe Type B MK2 | 128GB | 1800 MB/s | 1700 MB/s | 8K RAW on R5 II and R1 |
| AV PRO CFe Type B MK2 | 256GB | 1800 MB/s | 1700 MB/s | 8K RAW, long recording sessions |
| AV PRO CFe Type B MK2 | 512GB | 1800 MB/s | 1700 MB/s | Cinema and full-day shoots |
| CFe Type B ShotGun | 128GB | 1700 MB/s | 1500 MB/s | 4K and RAW stills burst |
| CFe Type B ShotGun | 256GB | 1700 MB/s | 1500 MB/s | General professional use |
For 8K RAW internal recording on the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon requires CFexpress Type B cards rated at sustained 1700 MB/s write or above. The AV PRO MK2 meets this specification. Lower-rated cards will cause the camera to drop to a lower quality recording mode or stop recording.
Angelbird CFexpress Type A — for Sony bodies
CFexpress Type A is a smaller form factor used primarily in Sony cameras (A7 IV, A7R V, FX3, FX30). Current Canon EOS R bodies use Type B, not Type A. If you shoot both Canon and Sony, Type A cards are worth stocking for the Sony side of your kit.
| Model | Capacity | Read | Write | For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AV PRO CFe Type A | 160GB | 900 MB/s | 800 MB/s | Sony A7 IV, A7R V, FX3, FX30 |
| AV PRO CFe Type A | 256GB | 900 MB/s | 800 MB/s | Sony cameras — extended sessions |
Canon users: Do not buy CFexpress Type A for your Canon body — the physical slot is different and Type A cards will not fit. Canon EOS R bodies use CFexpress Type B exclusively.
Angelbird SD Cards — V90, V60, V30
The Video Speed Class (V30, V60, V90) tells you the minimum sustained write speed the card will maintain. This is what matters for video and burst — not the headline read speed on the label.
| Speed class | Min sustained write | Use case | Canon bodies |
|---|---|---|---|
| V90 (UHS-II) | 90 MB/s sustained | 4K video, fast RAW burst, pro stills | R5 II slot 2, R6 III slot 2, R7, R8, R50 |
| V60 (UHS-II) | 60 MB/s sustained | 4K video at moderate bitrate, general stills | R50, R50 V — adequate for 4K 30p |
| V30 (UHS-I) | 30 MB/s sustained | FHD video, casual stills, backup cards | EOS R100 — maximum slot spec |
| Model | Speed class | Capacity | Read | Write (min sustained) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AV PRO SD V90 MK2 | V90 / UHS-II | 64GB | 280 MB/s | 150 MB/s |
| AV PRO SD V90 MK2 | V90 / UHS-II | 128GB | 280 MB/s | 150 MB/s |
| AV PRO SD V90 MK2 | V90 / UHS-II | 256GB | 280 MB/s | 150 MB/s |
| AV PRO SD V60 MK2 | V60 / UHS-II | 128GB | 280 MB/s | 90 MB/s |
| AV PRO SD V60 MK2 | V60 / UHS-II | 256GB | 280 MB/s | 90 MB/s |
| AV PRO SD V30 | V30 / UHS-I | 64GB | 100 MB/s | 45 MB/s |
| AV PRO SD V30 | V30 / UHS-I | 128GB | 100 MB/s | 45 MB/s |
V90 is the right choice for the secondary SD slot on the R5 Mark II and R6 Mark III — it keeps up with 4K recording and RAW burst overflow without throttling. V60 is adequate for the EOS R50 V's 4K modes. V30 is only appropriate for the UHS-I slot of the EOS R100 since UHS-II speed classes are wasted on a UHS-I slot.

Common Questions
The physical size and slot shape are different — a Type A card will not fit in a Type B slot and vice versa. Canon EOS R bodies (R1, R5 Mark II, R6 Mark III, R6V) use CFexpress Type B exclusively. Sony cameras like the A7 IV and FX3 use Type A. The performance ceiling is also different: Type B supports higher peak speeds (up to 2000+ MB/s) while Type A tops out around 900 MB/s. If you shoot only Canon, buy Type B.
For 8K RAW internal recording in the primary CFexpress Type B slot, you need a card rated at 1700 MB/s sustained write — V90 class does not apply to CFexpress (CFe has its own speed ratings). For the secondary SD slot used as backup or overflow during 4K recording and RAW stills burst, V90 SD is strongly recommended. A V60 card in the SD slot will work for some 4K modes but may throttle during sustained 4K HQ recording.
The EOS R7 has two UHS-II SD slots. A UHS-I card will physically fit but will run at UHS-I speeds only — you lose the speed benefit the slot provides. For the R7's 30fps RAW burst, UHS-I cards will fill the buffer in 2–3 seconds and then slow dramatically. Use V90 UHS-II cards in both slots for sustained burst performance.
For stills photography, 128GB typically holds 800–1500 RAW files depending on the body. For 8K RAW video on the R5 Mark II, 128GB holds approximately 20–25 minutes of footage. For full-day event or wildlife shoots without offloading, 256GB is the safer choice. It is better to have one high-quality 256GB card than two slower 128GB cards.
CFexpress Type B cards require a CFexpress Type B reader — standard SD card readers will not read them. Angelbird makes their own readers; Sony and several other brands also make compatible readers. For SD cards, Angelbird V90 UHS-II cards work in any SD reader but run at UHS-I speeds in a standard UHS-I reader. A UHS-II reader is needed to get full speed for file transfer.
