Selphy in Practice — What to Expect
The Selphy CP1500 is the printer we get the most questions about. A few things worth knowing before you buy:
- Dye-sublimation, not inkjet. Selphy prints use a thermal dye process — the colour is embedded in the paper surface, not sitting on top as ink. The result is waterproof, smudge-proof, and rated for over 100 years of indoor display without fading.
- Media and ink are sold together. Each Selphy media kit (KP-108IN, RP-108IN) contains both the dye cassette and the paper in one pack. You cannot use third-party paper in the Canon cassette — use genuine Canon media for reliable results and warranty compliance.
- Print from phone, Wi-Fi, or USB-C. The CP1500 connects to an iPhone or Android over Wi-Fi via the Canon Mini Print app. You can also print directly from a Canon camera or a USB-C connection. No PC required for basic operation.
- Speed: about 47 seconds per print. This is normal for dye-sub — it is not a paper jam. For events printing 100+ photos, plan the workflow accordingly.
