The Case for the EOS RP in 2026
The EOS RP launched in 2019 and the camera world has moved significantly since then. So why is it still worth considering? Two reasons: weight and price. At 485g with battery, it is one of the lightest full-frame bodies Canon makes — only the EOS R8 (461g) is lighter. And at its current MRP, it offers the RF mount and a full-frame sensor at a price point nothing else in Canon's lineup can match.
It is not the right tool for fast sports, demanding video work, or shooting in the rain. But for a travel photographer who wants a full-frame camera they will actually carry every day, or a portrait photographer on a budget who wants the full-frame look with any RF prime, it still delivers.

What to Know Before Buying
- The 4K crop is significant. The RP applies a 1.6× crop for 4K video, which effectively turns a 24mm lens into a 38mm equivalent. For travel video this can be limiting. For dedicated video work, consider the R8 or R6 Mark III instead.
- Autofocus is first-generation Dual Pixel. Subject tracking and eye AF work but are slower and less reliable on moving subjects than the R6 or R8's newer AF systems. For portraits and travel, it is fine. For sports or active children, it shows its age.
- The battery life is limited. CIPA-rated at 250 shots — carry a spare LP-E17 if you are shooting all day. The LP-E17 is in stock at our counter.
- The RF mount opens the full lens range. Every current RF and RF-S lens works on the RP, including the full L-series lineup. The lens choice matters more than the body at this level.
Common Questions
The R8 if you can stretch the budget — it has a significantly better AF system, 40fps burst, and better video capability. The RP if the price difference is the deciding factor and your subjects are not fast-moving. Both use the same LP-E17 battery, the same RF mount, and neither has weather sealing or IBIS.
Yes — EF lenses work fully with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R on the RP. Autofocus, image stabilisation, and metering all function normally. This makes the RP a low-cost entry into the RF system for photographers with existing EF glass.
No — as of our latest Canon India stock, the EOS RP is still available and in production. Canon has not announced a discontinuation. It occupies a specific price point in the lineup that the R8 does not fully replace due to cost.
